With just over two weeks to go until the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, families are being reminded of the many events taking place in Staffordshire.

An Alice in Wonderland themed tea party, street parties, beacon lighting and race days are amongst the events organised to mark the Queen’s 70 years of service.

Events taking place over the long Bank Holiday weekend include:

  • An Alice in Wonderland themed tea party will take place on June 4 in the Market Place, Cannock, with live music and market stalls.
  • Tutbury Castle will host the lighting of the Jubilee Beacon on 2 June to coincide with the national campaign.
  • A Jubilee Raceday will take place at Uttoxeter racecourse on 2 June.
  • On 3 June, a Platinum Party will be held in Market Square in Stafford, where residents are encouraged to dress up in Jubilee attire.
  • A range of family activities will take place at Victoria Park in Stafford from June 2 to 5.
  • Staffordshire libraries are encouraging people to join the Big Jubilee Read and borrow one of the 70 titles chosen as part of the project.
  • In Bobbington in South Staffordshire, an aircraft hangar at Halfpenny Green Airfield has been commandeered for a day of music, dance, food and drink.  While in Trysull, a Jubilee lunch with a tractor rally, afternoon tea and even a welly-wanging competition has been organised.
  • Penkridge Sports and Recreation Centre will host 5 days of live music and entertainment from 1 June-5 June. Tickets are required.
  • Staffordshire Archives and Heritage service will also be sharing photos on social media of the Queen during her many visits to the county.

Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council said:

“With only a couple of weeks to go until the Queen’s Jubilee, we’re all starting to get very excited.

“The Platinum Jubilee will be a historic moment for our country and the perfect opportunity to show our appreciation for what Her Majesty has done for us over many years.  We want Staffordshire to join in with what will be a fantastic weekend of celebrations and with something for everyone, there’s no excuse to miss out.

“We have had an incredible response from our community so far, with over 80 requests for street parties across Staffordshire. It has also been great to see Staffordshire play its part in the Queen’s Green Canopy project; planting over 1000 tree’s across the county.  I do hope people are able to take some time out to join the celebrations and enjoy the long Bank Holiday weekend.”

Other Jubilee activities include the brewing of two new handcrafted Jubilee beers by Burton Town brewery. The 2 brews will be bespoke recipes; one will be inspired by the flavours of the Queen’s Coronation anointing oil, whilst the second beer will be produced in memory of Prince Philip’s favourite tipple.

Staffordshire based pottery company Emma Bridgewater have also released a new collection to commemorate the Jubilee.  The limited edition designs include pieces from mugs to storage jars, including the God save the Queen mugs and Jubilee Tree planting mugs.

National events marking the occasion include the Queen’s Green Canopy project, the Jubilee Birthday parade, Jubilee Big Lunch, the lighting of beacons and the Platinum Pudding competition.
