Motorists are being urged to take extra care this weekend and people asked to check on more vulnerable friends and neighbours with sub-zero temperatures forecast for Staffordshire.

Freezing fog overnight and early morning could make driving conditions difficult with temperatures set to drop below zero degrees, particularly in rural areas.

People should check in on more vulnerable friends, family or neighbours, especially if they live alone or have a health condition.

Staffordshire County Council’s gritting crews will be out across the county and working through the night. While roads may be gritted, people should take extra care and drive to the conditions.

David Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council said:

Our gritting teams do a fantastic job in keeping us moving throughout the winter and will be out in anticipation of the forecast freezing temperatures.
While we’re not expecting snow, there is likely to be some harsh frosts and freezing fog. People need to take extra care and allow additional travel time, especially if driving at night or early morning.
We know that Staffordshire people will look out for more vulnerable friends, family and neighbours which we appreciate.”

On routine winter days and nights gritting crews will be focusing on the major routes and extending to the wider network in prolonged ice and snow conditions.
