Work on Junction Upgrade Continues at Pace

Work to upgrade a main junction north of Stafford to create access to a new housing development moves to the next stage.

The junction on the A34 Stone Road at Redhill provides access on its western side to Redhill Business Park.

A new road is being built on the eastern side for access to the new development.

The scheme, which started in February 2021, includes widening the A34 to create a dedicated left turn lane southbound and a right turn lane within the former central reservation for northbound traffic.

The existing southbound pavement is also being widened to create a shared footway and cycleway.

To ensure the next phase of the works can be carried out safely, an overnight closure of the southbound carriageway of the A34 Stone Road is required.

The road will be closed between Whitgreave Lane and the A513 Beaconside from 20:00 on Tuesday 17th August until 06:00 on Wednesday 18th August.

A signed diversion will be in place via the A51, A518 and the A513.

The northbound carriageway will remain open.

Following the overnight closure, until 16th November, access to and from the Business Park will only be available from the A34 northbound carriageway.

Additionally, the footway on the southbound side will be closed between the junctions of William Bagnall Drive and Beaconside from 18th August until 13th October.

A diversion will be in place using the footway on the northbound side, with a temporary pedestrian crossing in place to help people cross the road safely.

David Williams, cabinet member for highways and transport at Staffordshire County Council said:

“This is an important scheme being funded by the developers that will provide access to the new housing development.

"Stafford will see a significant amount of development over the next few years and it’s vital that the correct infrastructure is in place.

“With this type of scheme, there will always be some degree of disruption but throughout the works crews have worked hard to minimise any inconvenience.

"It’s a busy section of road and to ensure this next stage of the project can be carried out safely, there will be another overnight closure required.

"We have been keeping residents and businesses updated on progress throughout the project and I would like to thank drivers for their patience in advance of this brief closure for their co-operation.”

The scheme is due to be completed in December 2021 and is being managed by the county council’s highways team and fully funded by the developers.
