Community push to tackle Covid cases in Burton

Posted on Monday 15th March 2021

Health chiefs are calling on Burton residents to make sure they get tested, get vaccinated when eligible and follow the rules to help bring cases down even further.

Although case rates have fallen the borough continues to have the highest rate in Staffordshire, with the areas of Anglesey, Shobnall, Horninglow and Eton Park continuing to be areas of concern.

Local health partners are now using ‘trusted voices’ from the community to try and dispel any myths circulating and to encourage more people to promote the importance of regular testing and getting vaccinated when eligible.

On top of rapid testing and vaccine take up advice, residents are also being reminded of the continued importance of following hands, face, space guidance to control the virus. This advice applies even if you have received a vaccine.

Dr Richard Harling, Director of Health and Care at Staffordshire County Council said:

“While the rates have fallen during lockdown, they are still much higher than we would like in parts of Burton.

“As lockdown restrictions are lifted further, it is important that people continue to play their part by getting tested, getting vaccinated and sticking to the rules. This is the best way to keep our schools open, help all our local businesses reopen and help protect people in the community from this virus.

“Community and home testing has been expanded, so it has never been easier to book a test and help keep yourself and the people you care for safe.”

Dr Shammy Noor, Burton GP, is echoing the calls:

“Regular testing and vaccination for all is key to getting out of this pandemic. It’s important we continue to work with communities and reassure people that the vaccination is completely safe and it is the best form of protection from the virus. We know that uptake from people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds is generally lower than average. So, it’s down to us all to reach out and speak to our friends, families and communities.

“By understanding any hesitations or misinformation people may have is vital in allowing us to successfully encourage more people to take up their vaccine slot when offered.”
