Thousands of Staffordshire pupils will be getting their GCSE results, after one of the most disrupted school years in living memory.

GCSE exams did not take place this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which closed schools across the country.

Instead, following the government’s announcement on Monday, pupils will be given grades which have been assessed by their teachers.

Schools have been working incredibly hard throughout the pandemic to ensure pupils can continue their lessons, while pupils have had to cope with new ways of accessing learning.

All schools will have communicated to students how to collect their exam results, whether by email, online portal or in person from the school itself.

Pupils are also being reminded to celebrate their results sensibly, and to continue to observe guidelines to help stop the spread of Covid-10.

County Councillor Jonathan Price, Cabinet Member for Education said:

“It is good news that we now have clarity on how GCSE results are being calculated, as this means pupils can focus on their next steps, whether that’s going into sixth form, college, or taking an apprenticeship.

“All school pupils have had a very challenging year so far, from coping with changes in how lessons are delivered, to being separated from friends and having uncertainly around their exams. The way pupils have responded to these challenges has been nothing short of inspiring.

“Teachers have also been working incredibly hard to keep lessons going throughout lockdown, and undertaking the unenviable task of taking decisions that direction impact people’s futures.

“I also want to remind people to celebrate getting their results sensible, and to keep following social distancing guidelines. Our young people have a huge amount to offer this county, and are continuing to play an important part in helping to prevent a second peak of infections.

“To every pupil picking up GCSE results today, I want to wish them the best for the future.  This year has been very difficult for everyone, but I am proud of the way Staffordshire schools and students have risen to the challenge.”
