Hundreds of residents in Eton Park and surrounding areas have been tested for COVID-19.

Queues formed outside St Chad’s Community Centre well before the testing opened at 12noon, with people eager to get a free COVID-19 test.

A total of 75 tests were conducted within the first hour and a half of the centre opening.

When doors closed at 7pm, 235 people had been tested from a number of different communities in Burton.

The tests were for those without symptoms. Those with symptoms should stay at home and book a test online at www.NHS.uk/coronavirus or by phoning 119. Home tests for people who don’t have access to a car can be booked on 0300 111 8050.

Between July 4 and August 8 there have been 83 confirmed cases in Burton, with the majority of these centred in Anglesey, Shobnall, Horninglow and Eton Park.

Dr Johnny McMahon, Cabinet Member for Health, Care and Wellbeing said:

“Once again, communities in Burton have shown just how determined they are to reduce the COVID-19 infection rates in the area, and I want to thank them for once again coming out to get tested. I also want to thank the mosques, churches and community centre for pulling together to host this latest round of testing.

“Testing is key to understanding the spread of this virus, and the more information we have, the more steps we can take to manage outbreaks. As we know some people might have the virus without displaying any symptoms, so it’s really important that as many people as possible support the pilot and get tested.”

Revd George Crossley from the St Chad’s Community Centre said:

“It has been good to see so many people from across the community coming to the centre and having a good chat whilst waiting at times. It is a symbol of our unity in dealing with COVID.”

Shaid Hussain from the Parker Street Mosque said:

“We've had an amazing day in the Eton area with a remarkable turnout at St Chads Community Centre with people coming from all walks of life. Our appreciation to the NHS team for their efforts today and throughout the pandemic.”

The county continues to work closely with East Staffordshire Borough Council, the NHS and the town’s communities in the call for people to follow national guidance carefully.

The guidance is to:

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Limit your contact with people not in your household
  • Stay at home when you can. If you do need to go out keep your distance – 2m ideally
  • Wear face coverings on public transport
  • Self-isolate for ten days and book a test if you have symptoms

Self-isolate for 14 days if you have been contacted by the NHS Test & Trace Service and told you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive.
