People will be able to find out more on the latest phase of works on a major Staffordshire road scheme at an information event this week.

Construction of the final section of the Lichfield Southern Bypass is well under way. The £17.5million scheme will connect the A5127

Birmingham Road with the A5206 London Road. The present section involves building an underpass beneath the Cross City railway line.

Following completion of the bridge, a new section of road will link with a new housing development and new primary school in addition to easing congestion in the city centre and around the railway station.

During Christmas week the project team will be installing a new rail bridge which will allow the construction of the underpass underneath the Cross City line. The installation work will begin at midnight on Christmas Eve. Work will continue round-the-clock until 11pm on Saturday December 28.

The bridge installation is set to take place on Boxing Day afternoon. People can find out more about this phase of the works at a public information drop-in session next Wednesday, December 18, between 1pm and 8pm. It takes place in a cabin on the western side of the project site which can be accessed off the Falkland Road/Birmingham Road roundabout. Parking space will be available.

Staffordshire County Council’s head of highways James Bailey said:

Construction of the final section of the Lichfield Southern Bypass is a major engineering project which includes taking the road under the railway line. This has involved a lot of careful planning and has been scheduled to take place at Christmas when we can take possession of the railway line.

In order to get the job done in the allocated time we will need to work round-the-clock from midnight on Christmas Eve until 11pm on December 28. People can find out more detail about this phase at our information drop-in event next Wednesday.”

The project is being funded by the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, the Department for Transport and developers.
