EP Literacy Approach

Staffordshire County Council is committed to meeting the needs of all children with literacy difficulties. As these difficulties are widespread, the most effective use of resources is to support schools in order to develop their systems to enable teachers in school identify literacy difficulties as soon as possible, complete comprehensive assessments and deliver scientifically validated interventions.  For more details of this please refer to the SCC Literacy Guidance 2021 (459 KB).

In order to further support schools to meet literacy difficulties, the Educational Psychology Service has developed an EP Literacy Approach which focuses on the enjoyment of reading and improving decoding skills and specialist support if children are not making expected progress with the approach.

This approach is currently being offered, at no charge to all Staffordshire schools and comprises of:

  • A series of training webinars
  • A comprehensive online reading assessment and monitoring tool (EPATT)
  • Assistant Educational Psychologists to support implementation
  • Monthly twilight network meetings about a range of related topics

If you are interested and want to know more, please contact epliteracy@staffordshire.gov.uk for more details.

The EPS has also developed more guidance leaflets on other literacy interventions:
