Care to Smile Awards
On Monday 16 June, Staffordshire County Council joined forces with Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust to run the first Care to Smile Awards, recognising the importance of good oral hygiene in older people and celebrating the commitment of nursing and residential care homes in improving the oral health of residents living in care homes across Staffordshire.
Employees from 19 Staffordshire care homes were awarded for their dedication to improving mouth and dental care with their residents, these care homes have worked hard to meet the Care to Smile standards (based on NICE guidance) part of a project elivered by the Health Smile Team supported by the Care Market Development Team.
The Care to Smile training programme, run by Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust’s Healthy Smiles Team, has helped hundreds of people across Staffordshire and beyond, with the scheme covering the Shropshire, Telford and Stoke-on-Trent areas too.
Good oral health is important for good quality of life and is an essential part of routine personal care for residents in care homes. There is increasing evidence that poor oral health is linked to poor general health leading to diseases and aspiration pneumonia.
