In-year school admissions

Apply for an in-year admission to change your child's school during the school year

I want to move my child to a different school

Is your child unhappy at their current school?

Changing schools should be a last resort after all other options have been explored

Start by making an appointment to talk through your concerns with the school. Resolving issues early can help avoid disruption to your child’s education.

If you believe your child is being bullied, please tell the school immediately. All schools have anti-bullying policies and will work with you to address your concerns.

My child is not attending their current school

Some children may be reluctant to attend school and look to parents for permission to stay home. Avoid giving in to this pressure—it can make things worse.

If you’re having problems with your child’s attendance, speak to the school as soon as possible. If you decide to apply for a change of school, your child should continue attending their current school wherever possible while you wait for the outcome of your application.

Is your child in year 9, 10 or 11?

Parents of children in Years 9, 10, or 11 should be particularly aware that changing schools mid-year can have a serious impact on your child’s education.

A new school may not be able to match your child’s current subjects or curriculum commitments. Not all schools offer the same subjects at examination level, so it’s important to check this with your preferred school before making an application.

If your child’s behaviour causing concern at school?

Some parents/carers consider changing schools because they believe their child’s behaviour will improve in a new setting.

However, the most effective approach is for everyone to work together to understand and resolve the issues causing the poor behaviour.

My child has been excluded

Changing schools should not be used as a way of avoiding a fixed term or a permanent exclusion unless this is a managed process agreed by both schools.

You can get advice about exclusions on the Staffordshire Connects website.

SENDIASS (Staffordshire Family Partnership) can provide support and information to families to encourage positive communication with schools.

My child has additional needs but does not have an EHCP?

If you are thinking of changing your child's school because their needs are not being met it is important that you discuss your concerns with your child's current school.

SENDIASS (Staffordshire Family Partnership) can provide you with impartial information, advice and support.

If you still wish to apply for another school, please complete an in year application form and return this to your preferred school(s) as soon as possible. If you wish to apply for a school place outside of Staffordshire, you will need to approach the authority where the school is located.

You should receive a response within 10 school days or 15 school days at the very latest.  If you do not receive a response, please contact the school directly.
