Reintegration after absence
When a child is ready to return to school, the Education Welfare Officer (EWO) will work with the school, parents, health professionals, and any alternative provision (hospital school, PRU, or home tuition) to make a smooth transition.
Reintegration plan
Every school should have a personal plan for each child returning. This may include:
- Extra support to catch up on missed learning
- Involving the school nurse for advice and support
- Making reasonable adjustments under equalities law to ensure access
Timing
If the absence is long, the plan may be created closer to the return date to avoid putting pressure on the child.
- Most children will want to return to their normal routine quickly
- Some may need a gradual reintegration over time
Even for long-term illness, there should always be:
- A clear plan for return
- Ongoing contact with the school
