School appeal panel volunteers

Information on school appeal panels and how to volunteer

Last updated: 27th November

What is a school appeal panel?

Sometimes, a child doesn’t get a place at the school their family wanted. When this happens, the family can appeal. A panel of volunteers listens to both sides and helps decide what’s fair.

What you’ll do

As a panel member, you will:

  • Read the appeal documents before the meeting
  • Listen to the family and the school
  • Help decide if the school’s decision was fair
  • Be fair and impartial

Who can volunteer?

You can apply if you:

  • Are over 18
  • Want to help your community
  • Can be fair and keep things private
  • Are happy to read documents and attend meetings

You don’t need any special experience. People from all backgrounds are welcome.

What’s involved?

  • Attend a one-day training course (usually in February in Stafford)
  • Join 3 or 4 panels a year
  • Meetings are usually held during the day
  • Travel costs are paid
