Licensing of approved premises

Information on how to apply for a licence to approve premises for civil marriage and civil partnership ceremonies

Revocation and reviews of approved premises

Revocation

An authority may revoke an approval if conditions are breached or the premises become unsuitable. Written notice must be given to the holder.

The Registrar General may also direct revocation for legal breaches. Before doing so, they must notify the holder in writing, allowing at least 14 days for a response. If revocation proceeds, the authority must act immediately and inform the holder.

Once revoked, the holder must notify affected couples. Authorities may also ask registrars to inform couples that proceedings cannot go ahead.

Reviews

Applicants can request a review of decisions to refuse, revoke (unless directed by the Registrar General), or impose non-standard conditions. Reviews must be handled by individuals not involved in the original decision.

The authority must issue a written outcome, stating the decision, reasons, and effective date if changed.
