We have custody of registers which have recorded births, deaths and marriages in Staffordshire since July 1837. We can help by locating certificates and performing searches of records.
How do I apply for a copy of a certificate?
If you know the date of the event and the area in which the event occurred, then an application for the certificate can be made to Staffordshire Registration Services.
The easiest way is to order online using our secure online ordering system.

How much do copy certificates cost?
All certificates will be charged at a statutory fee of £12.50 per certificate and a priority service will be set at a statutory fee of £38.50 per certificate.
Additional standard birth, death and marriage certificates vary in cost depending on when they are ordered or required.
Standard service
A certificate can be issued within five working days for £12.50. This includes the cost of the certificate, administration and postage.
Priority service
A priority service is available for £38.50. Your certificate will be sent by first class post on the same day if ordered before 1.30pm, or the next working day if ordered after 1.30pm.

I was adopted. Can I still obtain a copy certificate?
If you were adopted then you must contact the General Register Office (GRO) as they hold records of all adoptions. Local registration services do not hold any adoption records.
What if I do not know the area of Staffordshire in which the event occurred?
You can make an application to the General Register Office (GRO) as they hold records of all births, deaths and marriages that have taken place in England and Wales from 1837. The National Archives also holds archived records that are free to view.
What if I do not know the date of the event?
If you do not know the date of the event then you can make an application to the General Register Office (GRO) for a general search on the national database, or a 5-year search can be made at the Register Office covering the area where the event took place.
What if the event took place outside Staffordshire?
You can make an application to the General Register Office (GRO) as they hold records of all births, deaths and marriages that have taken place in England and Wales from 1837. The National Archives also holds archived records that are free to view.
What if the event took place before 1837?
Events that took place prior to 1837 are not held by Registration Services. These records are often in the form of church baptism, marriage and burial records and these are usually in the custody of the local archive service. Find out more about the Staffordshire Archives Service.
