Malnutrition in older adults
Malnutrition is not a normal part of ageing.
Over a million people over 65 in the UK suffer from malnutrition, most living in their own homes.
Signs and symptoms:
- Unplanned weight loss (loose clothes, dentures, belts, jewellery)
- Low body weight
- Lack of interest in eating or drinking
- Tiredness, muscle weakness, confusion, frequent illness
Why older people are more at risk:
- Reduced appetite, slower metabolism, muscle loss
- Changes in taste and smell
- Dental problems, dry mouth
- Difficulty preparing and eating food
What to do:
- Try the “3, 2, 1” approach:
- 3 fortified meals a day (add cheese, butter, cream, or fortified milk)
- 2 high energy snacks a day (cheese and crackers, toast, full-fat yoghurt, nuts, biscuits, fruit)
- 1 pint of fortified milk a day (add 4 tablespoons of dried milk powder to a pint of full-fat milk)
- Speak to a GP if you’re concerned.
