Data analytics

One of the key principles for any digital content is ensuring we are only creating content that solves a problem for users. This is also an important principle when reviewing existing content. You should be asking if the content is still relevant or needed?

To answer this question editors should be using both data analytics and user research.

Data analytics can tell you a lot about the efficiency of the digital service. You can use performance data to make sure:

  • the service is meeting user needs
  • the service allows users to easily complete the task it provides
  • there are enough people using the service to make it cost-efficient
  • people know about the service and are choosing to use it

It’s important to use the data collected to find ways to improve your service.

User research allows us to understand real life experiences and any evolving needs. As a council we aim to include our residents and communities in transforming and improving our services.

You should do research with a broad range of users, including:

  • those with limited digital access and confidence
  • people with a range of visual, hearing, motor and cognitive impairments
  • people who use assistive technologies, like screen readers or speech recognition software

Content owners and editors can contact the Digital team for support on accessing data analytics for their areas.
