Local Government Peer Challenge Report 2018-19

In September 2018, the county council invited a Local Government Association (LGA) Peer Challenge Team to scrutinise how we work with our communities, partners and each other to deliver the priorities set out in our Strategic Plan.

The team included respected local government officers and councillors from authorities similar to Staffordshire in terms of size and the challenges they face.

They spent time talking to more than 130 people, including members, officers and partners as part of their review.

Key findings

The review team have concluded that Staffordshire County Council is ambitious, has strong leadership and a good understanding of the communities it is working for.

They also found that although the council faces unprecedented financial challenge, it is prepared for this and keen to remain “aspirational” for residents.

At the heart of the report is recognition of the continued commitment, positive attitude and enthusiasm of the council’s officers and members.

The review team also made a number of recommendations for improvement. These include the need to focus on delivering the children’s system transformation programme, test proposals for meeting our financial challenges in the short to medium term and to provide greater clarity around our vision and future role to colleagues and partners.
