The Your Staffordshire Card is a discount card that allows young people from 11 to 19 to travel by bus, for journeys starting or finishing in the Staffordshire County Council area for a discounted rate.  This is just £1.20 per journey for 11-15 year olds and £1.30 for 16-19 year olds.

The county council's area does not include Stoke-on-Trent.

You can apply online. Alternatively you go to your nearest main library with proof of your identity, age and residence. Under 16s need parental permission. There is a yearly £10 charge to join the scheme

The council needs to prioritise where council tax revenue is spent and cannot continue to subsidise it beyond March 2017.  The Card needs to pay for itself to continue.  However, for the cost of £10 a year, the average amount people will save is £300, so it’s still great value for money.

Based on a major operator the average fare is £2.23 therefore the saving per journey is £0.93 for a 16-19 year old. Used twice a day for college for example would save £9.30 a week, college is usually 33 weeks of the year therefore resulting in a saving of over £300

The Your Staffordshire Card is valid for 12 months. If you lose the card or turn 16 before the 12 months is up you will need to pay another £10 for a replacement. Please bear this in mind before you apply if you will shortly turn 16.
If you already have a Your Staffordshire Card, you do not need to pay £10 a year unless your turn 16, when you'll need to apply for another card.

A 'Your Staffordshire Card' is likely to offer better value in the long term.  A Home to School pass will only cover your journeys to and from school or college.

The card will give you more chances to get out and about. You can use your card 24/7, including during school or college holidays. Bus operators offer competitive fares so check their websites to ensure you get the best deal.

You can use it on bus journeys that start or finish anywhere in the County Council area. This does not include Stoke-on-Trent. Please check with your local operator.

The card does not give you access to discounted bus travel outside Staffordshire. For long-distance journeys where you need to change buses you get the Staffordshire leg of the journey for a discount rate.

Please note: If you have to change buses within Staffordshire, each part of the journey will cost you another fare.

There is no need for young people under the age of 11 to apply for a card because they will automatically be eligible to travel for a maximum fee of £1.20 for bus journeys starting or ending in Staffordshire.  Please note that for some journeys a normal child fare might work out cheaper.

The photo for your card needs to adhere to the following criteria:

  • The photograph cannot be blurry and must capture all facial detail.
  • The background of the photograph must be light grey or cream.
  • Facial features must not be covered and should be fully visible.
  • The subject must not be too close or too far away from the camera, the photograph should show the all of the head, face and neck.
  • Eyes must not be covered, take care that the frames of glasses do not obstruct the eyes.

The card must be shown before paying for your fare to receive your discount.
Once you have received your confirmation email your card will usually be sent out within 10 working days.  Make sure you check your inbox to check that your photo has been accepted.

This depends on the rejection reason.

  • If there is an error in your application you will need to apply again.
  • If you are ineligible the reason will be given and there is little point reapplying.

Any problems, contact Staffordshire County Council on 0300 111 8000.
