Course content - What you will learn
This course teaches gardening skills like planting, soil care, and garden maintenance. You will learn how to grow a variety of plants and create beautiful, sustainable gardens. The course also covers tips for attracting wildlife and conserving natural spaces. You will get plenty of hands-on experience, and support will be available throughout to help you develop your gardening skills.
Who is the course aimed at?
The course is aimed at Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who live in a Staffordshire not Stoke-on-Trent postcode. The course is for individuals who want to further progress their skills and knowledge in gardening and conservation using science based learning.
Entry requirements
No prior knowledge or experience is required. An interest in nature gardening and conservation/ecology will be useful. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal.
Learning methods - how you will learn
You will learn through hands-on activities in the garden and classroom, exploring gardening and conservation techniques. Each session will include practical tasks, group discussions and personal reflection. You will develop skills in areas like wildflower gardening, water conservation, and soil management. Our supportive tutors will guide you, helping you apply your learning to real-world conservation projects.

Whether you need extra guidance, one-on-one assistance, or resources like tools and reference materials, we are here for you. Our friendly tutors provide regular feedback, encourage your progress, and ensure you feel confident. We are dedicated to making your gardening experience enjoyable and accessible to all learners.
Learning materials - what you will need to bring
All materials will be provided, including seeds, gardening tools and different soils. However, if you have your own gardening gloves, boots, or tools you would prefer to use, feel free to bring them along. We will provide you with a notebook so that you can record your findings to enhance your learner journal, as well as any personal notes or ideas related to gardening and conservation. Be prepared to get your hands dirty and enjoy a fun, practical experience!
Course assessments - how you will be assessed
You will be assessed through practical tasks and projects, reflecting your learning and progress, demonstrating you have achieved further learning in subject areas to include the sciences. Regular feedbacks with your tutor will help you review your skills and understanding. At the end of the course, you will reflect on your achievements and complete a final assessment in the form of a quiz, showing how you have applied gardening and conservation techniques.
What can learners do next / progress onto
Learners can progress onto further learning opportunities with UMRA, including courses in preparing for volunteering or other courses to build on the skills gained. They may also be supported to access the Staffordshire Brokerage Service, linking them to the Open Door or Connect to Work programmes to explore work experience, volunteering, training, and employment opportunities in gardening, conservation, or related fields.
