Charging at home – Where is my nearest public Electric Vehicle (EV) charge point?

Charge point maps by Zap-Map show where the nearest charge point is located and allows you to check which charge points are available across Staffordshire allowing you to plan your journey.

Charging at home - EV charging cable crossing the pavement or Cross-Pavement Solutions (Cable Gully Systems)

On December 24th, 2024, the Department for Transport (DfT) and Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) released the guidance document for Cross-pavement solutions for charging Electric Vehicles.

At present, Staffordshire County Council does not permit the trailing of cables or the installation of any cross-pavement solutions for Electric Vehicles, including gulleys or cable mats as it represents a health and safety hazard, and an impediment to the safe use of the highway by the visually and/or mobility impaired, or other affected user groups.

Under the Highways Act 1980, action may be taken to remove cables that are deemed unsuitable or unsafe.

We recognise the growing interest in such options, and we are actively reviewing potential alternatives. In addition, we are closely monitoring the progress of other councils who are currently conducting trials of these solutions, to better understand their effectiveness and impact.

Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund Allocation

Staffordshire County Council acknowledges the challenges faced by residents without access to off-street private parking. In collaboration with partners, district, and borough council colleagues, the council is preparing a comprehensive business case for the LEVI fund. This initiative aims to support the development of a convenient and accessible network of charging points across Staffordshire, specifically designed to address the county’s rural requirements, including community charging hubs.

Other EV Charging Options

An increasingly popular solution for residential charging is making use of peer-to-peer charging networks. There are a number of different platforms which facilitate the sharing of private charge points which do not require the trailing of a cable over a highway - usually on a private driveway or car park - for an agreed fee. Whilst the Council does not make any specific recommendations on specific peer-to-peer schemes, some examples are linked here:
