Reading groups

Reading groups are a great way to meet people, share ideas, and discover books you might not normally read.

Why join a reading group?

  • Make new friends
  • Explore different genres and authors
  • Enjoy lively discussions in a relaxed setting

You can join an existing group or start your own. Your local library can help you find a group near you or offer advice on setting one up.

Reading Group Sets Service

If you run a reading group, you can subscribe to our Reading Group Sets Service, which provides access to curated book sets for group reading.

What’s included?

  • Loan of 12 book sets per year
  • No request or overdue charges
  • Access to a wide selection of titles

Subscription fees

  • £45 per year – groups meeting outside the library
  • £40 per year – groups meeting in the library
  • £20 per year – audiobook reading groups

Subscriptions are paid at the library where you collect your sets.

How to request books

Groups can:

  • Submit a completed form twice a year with up to 10 title choices
  • Make more frequent requests if needed (allow at least 10 working days for processing)

Reading group sets are issued for 3 months and cannot be renewed. Lost or damaged items must be paid for.

Important information

  • Only titles from the Reading Group Sets List are covered by the subscription
  • Requests for new or in-demand titles may not be accepted
  • If your group wants to read books outside the list, members must borrow them individually and may incur standard library charges
