With over 70 miles of spectating opportunity the county of Staffordshire is set to come alive on race day as some of the fittest endurance athletes on the planet go head to head right in the heart of the UK.
With some stunning venues as part of the course we have detailed our top tips below on how to view the race.
Shugborough Estate – Run & Finish
The second transition, run course, expo and iconic IRONMAN finish line will be based at the Shugborough Estate. Race day buses are available from Shugborough for a small charge to Chasewater and the Cannock Chase hotspot. Please note the Essex bridge is closed for the race on Sunday so you cannot access the Shugborough Estate on foot from the Great Haywood side of the canal.
Chasewater Country Park - Swim Course
If you can handle the early Sunday rise the swim starts happen at Chasewater between 07:00 and 08:25 with the final athlete leaving the water at 09:35. The Chasewater site is completely locked down to traffic so the car parks on the Chasewater site are unavailable. The best plan is to park at Shugborough (see above) and catch the bus to Chasewater. The Holland Park car park on The Parade is available between 04:30 and 10:00 on Sunday morning and is around a 10 min walk to the Chasewater site.
Other spectating opportunities
There are other locations where you can watch the action on the bike and run courses which don’t have organised facilities in place such as extra parking.
Athletes will run down Main Road in Great Haywood from Trent Lane to Meadow Lane three times. It will not be possible to gain access to the Shugborough site from here via Essex Bridge or the canal but with crowds and entertainment expected this is sure to be a lively stretch of activity. The course will be live here with athletes from 09:30 to 17:00.
The bike course will be live from 09:15 to 13:45 at Wolseley Bridge on the A513 and A51 roundabout. Spectator traffic can approach from the North and get as far as Wolseley Bridge where parking is available at the pub and garden centre. Spectators can support the athletes on mile 54 as they approach the Shugborough Estate and start to think about the run course ahead. Please note you cannot get to this location from Rugeley on the A51 due to the road closures. Access is from the Great Haywood and Weston direction so this location is better for spectators approaching from the North or Stafford itself via the A518.
Kings Bromley, Yoxall and Newborough
Residents of Kings Bromley, Yoxall and Newborough are well placed to enjoy the athletes coming through on the bike course between 08:00 and 11:00.
General Road Closures and Restrictions
IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire have produced a road closure maps with information for local residents to be aware of the safety closures which take place on the Sunday morning of the race.
This should allow residents to plan their travel and minimise any impact from the event on their own plans. This may involve using alternative routes over the event weekend or adjusting journey times slightly.
