Suicide Prevention in Staffordshire

Suicide is a major public health issue. Each death from suicide is an individual tragedy and a loss to society. Suicide can be devastating to the surviving family psychologically, economically and spiritually.

In Staffordshire suicides make up around 1% of all deaths. They are the second most common cause of death among young people aged 16-24. They are also the third most common cause of death in people aged 25-49.

In order to ensure that we’re doing everything we can to prevent incidents of suicide and self-harm amongst the citizens of Staffordshire, we have developed the strategy below:

What are the aims of this strategy?

We want a multi-agency approach that will reduce the suicide rate and better support those affected by suicide in Staffordshire. To achieve this we have the following objectives:

  • To implement the local elements of the national suicide prevention strategy.

  • To promote a life course approach to suicide prevention, better understanding the circumstances that might prompt people to desperate measures and to recognise the key risk groups for Staffordshire.

  • To provide a shared and valid baseline for measuring improvement in reducing suicide rates.

  • To address the Staffordshire Children’s Board serious case review recommendation regarding reducing suicide and self-harm in adolescents.

  • To work across partners and with stakeholders to better understand effective interventions that will improve the current provision of services.

  • To influence the commissioning intentions of local commissioners to address any identified gaps.
