Waste minimisation workshops for primary schools
The Sustainability Team is delivering fun, interactive waste minimisation workshops for primary schools. Following a successful pilot in schools across Newcastle and East Staffordshire, the initiative is now being rolled out across Staffordshire.
The workshops cover key topics such as recycling correctly, reducing plastic use, and reusing items wherever possible. Pupils also learn what happens to waste once it leaves their home, including why it’s important to keep recyclable items out of general waste bins. Many children are surprised to discover how much of their everyday waste could still be recycled, showing how small changes can make a real difference.
Sessions are highly interactive and include activities such as a bean bag recycling game, a manual conveyor belt and hands on demonstrations. These activities help bring the topic to life and encourage pupils to think differently about waste at home and at school.
Feedback from schools has been extremely positive, with high levels of engagement and growing awareness among pupils of the actions they can take to reduce waste.
