If you applied using a paper form you will receive a letter in the post. These will be sent on Thursday 04 May 2017.  As we operate a second class postal system it may take a few days for your letter to reach you.

How are nursery places allocated?

Applications for maintained nursery settings are processed centrally by the School Admissions and Transport Service. Attendance at a particular nursery setting will not guarantee admission to any particular Reception Class or give any advantage to the child’s application for Reception. Parents must make a separate application for admission to Reception at the appropriate time.

For the majority of schools operating a maintained nursery/foundation class in Staffordshire the normal admissions criteria is used in the in the allocation of places.

Some schools use their own admission criteria. You are advised to obtain a copy of their admission criteria directly from the school.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide any supportive information required in order for the application to be assessed against the published admissions criteria, the Local Authority will not seek to obtain this information of behalf of the applicant.

There are still nursery places available at a number of Staffordshire schools. Please refer to the PDF DocumentSummary of available nursery places (263KB).  This information is correct as at 02 May 2017 and is subject to change.

I am satisfied with the nursery that I have been offered. What do I need to do?

Your place will be automatically accepted.  The nursery which you have been offered will be in contact in due course to confirm the admission arrangements for your child.

I have not been offered a place at my preferred nursery, will my child be placed on a waiting list?

Unsuccessful applicants will be placed on a waiting list in accordance with the oversubscription criteria stated above and not based on the date their application was received. If places become available after the offer date they will be offered to the child at the top of the waiting list.

Waiting Lists will be kept until the end of the autumn term of admission. Inclusion on a nursery’s waiting list does not mean that a place will eventually become available at the preferred nursery.  A child’s position on a waiting list is not fixed and is subject to change, i.e. they can go up or down the list since each added child will require the list to be ranked again in line with the oversubscription criteria listed above.

Can I appeal?

There is no statutory right of appeal for admission to a maintained nursery setting. Any disputes over the administration of the policy will be dealt with by the Staffordshire County Council complaints procedure.

Other Options

There are a number of other settings available for 3 and 4 year olds including private and voluntary day nurseries, independant schools, playgroups etc, which offer free early education places.  Some of these settings may be based on a school site and may be run by the school governors or by a private provider.  You can find details of providers in your local area by visiting http://staffs.fsd.org.uk
