School Governors

Governors make an important contribution to education and the way schools are run. Becoming a governor can also help develop new and existing skills.

Who is eligible?

Anyone aged 18 or above can apply. You don’t need to have a family member at a school to become a governor.

Opportunities avaliable

Governor vacancies are avaliable across the county, and there is a particular need in some districts where there is a shortage of volunteers. Even if there isn’t a vacancy in the school closest to you, there will be a school not too far away that will appreciate your support.

Role and duties

Governors don’t get involved with the day to day running of the school, but keep an overview of what is happening, supporting the Head Teacher to review and plan.

Your duties will include:

  • Setting the strategic direction, policies and objectives for the school.

  • Approving the budget.
  • Reviewing progress against the budget and objectives.

  • Challenging and supporting senior staff.

  • Playing a part in appointing staff.
