Member comments on committee attendance

I am a member of several committees within the County Council. These committees allow me to obtain an insight into some of the less known work within the organisation, and I welcome the opportunity to attend
the meetings, which scrutinise the decisions being made by officers and other
professionals, to ensure that the right work is being done at the right time,
in the right way and by the right people, so that the citizens of our county
can feel sure we, as a County Council, have their best interests at heart.

Outside body appointments

I was also appointed to represent the county council on the following outside bodies:

  • Enville Educational Charity
  • Family Improvement Board - South Staffordshire Family Improvement Board (Vice-Chair)
  • Kinver Exhibition Foundation
  • Safer Neighbourhood Panel - South Staffordshire District
  • South Staffordshire Rural Transport Partnership (Substitute)
  • Wolverhampton Business Airport

Member comments on Outside bodies

It has been such a privilege to work with the Family Improvement Board, the Enville Education Charity and Kinver Exhibition Foundation– the work they do behind the scenes, to improve the lives of local people, is very humbling, and often goes without recognition. Being a member of the Safer Neighbourhood Panel has given me a real insight as to what our police are doing to reduce crime and increase visibility in South Staffordshire.

The Wolverhampton Business Airport committee has been an eye opener in the workings of a small aviation organisation, and I look forward to working closely with the team in the near future as developments to improve the site are discussed going forward.

Divisional activities

Without doubt the most challenging part of my role is dealing with issues with our extensive highways. Managing the expectations of our citizens in my division is also a challenge, but working together we have, and are, achieving great things into improving our highways for the safety of all local people.

Special Activities

In several of the villages in my Division I have worked hard with the Parish Councils to encourage the Community Speedwatch initiative, and have managed to bring on board 6 out of 7 parishes. This is a great enterprise which allows people to take control of their own areas, and ensure people are safe from inconsiderate drivers.

I have worked with local community groups such as the KCSA in Kinver to help fund the local Children’s Café, and we’re currently undertaking a new project to help socially isolated citizens become engaged with their parishioners, at the same time improving the local area with tidying green spaces and community areas within the parish.

In Swindon I arranged a ‘Party in the Park’ event, at which all members of a mobile home park were invited to bring food and drink and listen to singers on the green. This was a great way of helping people really communicate with their neighbours, and we managed to obtain volunteers to help out with a car share scheme for residents who are not mobile and needed help getting to Dr’s appointments and shops etc.

In Himley I arranged a group of local people to meet and try to find a solution to the issues of losing a bus service. We’re now working with a local volunteer group and the District Council to provide a tailor made solution which everyone is happy with.

In Trysull, the ongoing issues with trucks using the Ebstree Road have been challenging, but having worked hard with the local Parish Council and various members of the community we are almost at the end of a long fight, and I’m proud to say we will soon have our village and roads back, when speed restriction signs are in place.

Member comments on Community Fund spend

The truth is that the funding is secondary – the concept is the thing, and I’ve worked with groups of people from organisations with exceptional ideas for ways to improve the lives of local people. Our new criteria, outlining the need for people to help each other, stay fit and healthy, and to look after the areas around us are even more of a focus now, and working together to help community groups kickstart their plans means there’s nothing we can’t achieve in these areas.
