Active travel construction

We have been awarded £1.83 million by the Department of Transport as part of the government’s Active Travel Fund Tranche 2 in order to help deliver Staffordshire's Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), supporting the creation of long-term projects which aim to enable people to cycle, walk and wheel more safely around our neighbourhoods and town centres. The LCWIP can be found on our walking and cycling page.

The designs of the improvement schemes prioritise these healthier, more sustainable forms of travel, allowing people to access local services more easily and better enjoy the spaces around them, as well as encouraging people to maintain smarter, healthier travel habits over the long term.

The schemes are supported in part by an additional £0.977 million received by Staffordshire County Council following the Sustrans Paths for Everyone funding, which aims to make the National Cycle Network a traffic-free, more consistent and accessible Network for everyone.

Using the principles set out by the Active Travel Fund and Paths for Everyone, Staffordshire County Council put together four proposals for schemes to improve our spaces. The proposals deal with areas in Burton, Cannock, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stafford.

Following public consultation and design alterations resulting from your feedback, we are excited to announce that the construction programme for our four active travel schemes is due to commence shortly and aim to be complete by the end of 2022. A review of the results of the public consultation can be found here.

More information on the individual schemes will be available shortly.

Although every effort has been made to minimise disruption during the improvement works, we appreciate that the traffic management systems in place to facilitate them will inevitably cause temporary travel network delays. We appreciate your patience during the delivery of the improvements and look forward to you enjoying the benefits that will come of them.If you would like to report any issues relating to the works on site, please use this link to Report a fault online or contact directly via the instructions on the signs on site.

A view of traffic disruptions in the area can be found here.

This page will continue to be updated as construction progresses.
