A campaign backed by Burton Albion Football Club is urging people in COVID-19 hit areas of Burton to go the extra mile and follow the new measures in place and avoid a possible local lockdown.
With the country braced for further restrictions to be confirmed today, extra new measures came into force earlier this month for people living in the Burton wards of Anglesey, Shobnall, Horninglow and Eton Park.
Since July 4, there have been 206 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Burton, with 136 of these in the four wards.
Several Burton Albion FC players and staff, many of whom live and have close connections with the affected areas, have recorded videos calling on people to do their bit, follow the new measures and go the extra mile.
Dr Johnny McMahon, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Care and Wellbeing, said:
“I am delighted Burton Albion Football Club are supporting this important rallying call, as it really is in everybody’s best interest to play their part, go the extra mile and stop the spread of this deadly virus.
“A combined responsibility from all members of our communities, working closely with the council and its partners, is the key to saving lives and preventing further measures being imposed upon Burton by central Government.”
Lisa Beard, Community Operations Manager for Burton Albion Community Trust said:
“We were happy to support this campaign and urge our fans go the extra mile and understand the new measures that are in place in parts of Burton.
“This is a life-changing issue that has affected us all in many ways and the players and staff didn’t hesitate when asked to help to get the ‘go the extra mile’ message out there.”
