Door-to-door testing in latest bid to stop COVID-19

Door-to-door testing will be taking place in Burton on Thursday, in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the town.

NHS representatives will be visiting certain places in the Anglesey area of town, which has seen a spike in the number of coronavirus cases in recent weeks.

They will be handing out home testing kits, which allows households to swab themselves, before collecting the sealed kits later.

Between July 4 and August 23 there have been 110 confirmed cases in Burton, with the majority of these centred in Anglesey, Shobnall, Horninglow and Eton Park.

The door-to-door testing is the latest step to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the area. Already, more than 800 people have taken advantage of special walk-in test centres held in the town over recent weeks.

Dr Johnny McMahon, Cabinet Member for Health, Care and Wellbeing said:

“It has been very encouraging to see the amount of positive cases levelling off in Burton, but we cannot afford to be complacent.

“We still want to test as many people as we can, so this latest round of testing will see NHS staff knocking on people’s doors to give them a home testing kit.

“Everyone who will be visited has been notified so they know what to expect, and we’re hoping that as many people as possible join in with the scheme, as this will give us the best possible information to control the outbreak.

“The numbers are stalling, which is a good sign, but everyone still needs to play their part so we can really get a grip of COVID-19 and stop it in its tracks.”

Door-to-door testing will be carried out on Thursday 27 August.

The county continues to work closely with East Staffordshire Borough Council, the NHS and the town’s communities in the call for people to follow national guidance carefully.

The guidance is to:

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Limit your contact with people not in your household
  • Stay at home when you can. If you do need to go out keep your distance – 2m ideally
  • Wear face coverings on public transport
  • Self-isolate for ten days and book a test if you have symptoms

Self-isolate for 14 days if you have been contacted by the NHS Test & Trace Service and told you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive.
