Statement on proposed closure of John Lewis store Tamworth

Staffordshire County Council leader Philip Atkins said:

This is terrible news for those employees concerned and their families. The county council is working continually with partners to ensure we are putting the right support in place for anyone affected by redundancy. Through our Countywide Redundancy Task Group, we will help signpost them to relevant organisations to find alternative employment, retrain or learn new skills.

It is also a setback to Tamworth and its visitor economy. Ventura Park and the John Lewis store are major attractions to the town so this will be a huge loss. Working with the borough council we have done much to regenerate the town in recent years and people can be assured that this work will continue with extra pace to maintain Tamworth’s vitality.”
