Public health chiefs have moved to reassure residents after the Government’s plan to manage the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak moves from ‘contain’ to ‘delay’.

The move is in an effort to slow down the spread of the virus.

The new measures from the Government include:

  • People who are experiencing flu-like symptoms and have a new or persistent cough symptoms and/or temperature of 37.8C and above are being asked to self-isolate for seven days.
  • Schools are to remain open, but international school trips will be cancelled
  • People over 70 are being advised not to go on cruises

The number of residents confirmed with Coronavirus in Staffordshire remains unchanged today at four, with the number of cases reported in the Midlands now at 44.

Dr Richard Harling, Staffordshire County Council’s Director of Health and Care said:

“Staffordshire County Council is working with health colleagues to do everything we can to slow the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the people of Staffordshire are protected.

“The Government has now moved to the ‘delay’ phase of their plan, which includes extra measures to protect the more vulnerable in our society in particular.

“For many of us, this means taking a few extra precautions, such as self-isolating for seven days if we are experiencing flu-like symptoms, but the message is loud and clear that the most effective way to reduce the risk is still to follow good basic hygiene, and washing hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds.

“With the new measures now in place, I would also advise businesses and residents to think about how this will affect them, and prepare for any further measures should they become necessary.”
