Residents in flood risk areas of Burton are being urged to continue to be prepared until River Trent levels fall further.
Staffordshire County Council Leader Philip Atkins said that although the river levels have begun dropping it was important for people to keep up to date with the latest advice from the Environment Agency
Philip said: “I appreciate this is an upsetting time for people whose homes have been flooded and are facing a clean-up today. The good news is that river levels now are slowly falling, but people living and working in the areas that were identified as risk areas yesterday still need to be prepared and should continue to follow the advice from the Environment Agency today.
“We are continuing to work closely with the agency and emergency services so we are fully prepared should river levels start to rise again. In the meantime you can find out the latest situation here.
The Environment Agency say that although river levels are dropping reducing the risk of flooding, flooding has affected areas around the riverside areas of Burton, including the Waterside Road area in Stapenhill, Burton Bridge area, Newton Road area in Winshill and Church Lane in Newton Solney. The weather forecast is for bands of rain and scattered showers for the next few days.
Overnight the county council’s gritting crews provided the Environment Agency with 1,000 sandbags to help shore up flood defences at strategic points if need be. Sandbags are not provided to individual properties.
