Reminder of Danger of Cooling off in Open Water

"Everyone is upset to hear the news of this tragic event"

People are being reminded of the dangers of swimming in open water following the death of a 21-year-old man in Chasewater, in Staffordshire.

While the circumstances of this tragic accident are still being investigated, Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet member responsible for Chasewater, said that everyone is shocked by the news of the accident.

Mark said:

Everyone is upset to hear the news of this tragic event at Chasewater reservoir and it is so sad that a day out enjoying the summer sun has ended in tragedy for this young man and his family and our thoughts are with his loved ones today.

Though we do not yet know the full circumstances of how this tragic accident happened, it is a sad reminder of how even the strongest swimmer can find themselves struggling while swimming in cold water.

We all want to enjoy the warmer weather, but our advice to everyone is not to be tempted to cool off by swimming unsupervised in open waters.”

Staffordshire Police were called to the reservoir, which is owned and managed by Staffordshire County Council, yesterday after reports that the man and a young girl were in difficulties. The girl was able to reach safety.

Anybody with any information is asked to contact Staffordshire Police or ring 101.
