Children and young people library service: overview

We are here to help children and young people with their reading and learning.

You are never too young to join the library.

Pre-school children

There are a range of board books, picture books, beginner books and audio books. Free Baby Bounce and Rhyme and storytelling sessions help to encourage a love of stories and reading. You can also find out about Bookstart at your local library, the national book gifting programme run by Booktrust that helps foster a love of reading at an early age.

5-11 year olds

There are a wide range of stories to help you practice your reading and information books to help with homework and hobbies.

Each summer children can sign up to the Summer Reading Challenge across Staffordshire Libraries. Collecting rewards as they read. The challenge is free to take part in and supports literacy levels during the school holidays.

12-16 year olds

There are eBooks and eMagazines to download. There are volunteering opportunities to help you develop new skills and make new friends.

Young Teen Fiction

For 11- to 14-year-olds there is the Young Teen Fiction Book Award, where teens can nominate the books for the shortlist and vote for the winner.

Young Poet Laureate

If you are passionate about poetry, enjoy writing poems and are aged 14-18 years, why not apply to be our next Young Poet Laureate?  For more information, ask at your local library and look out for the publicity.

Nursery and School Staff

We encourage nurseries and schools to bring children to the library and for children to become members. We offer story sessions and information visits where children will learn about the resources available and how to use the library. To discuss a visit, please contact your local library.
