Statement of Reasons
This proposal is required to improve road safety and provide a crossing facility for pedestrians and vulnerable users on Blake Street, near the junction with Station Approach.
The scheme has been developed following community concern raised via County Councillor David Smith. Traffic surveys undertaken on Blake Street have shown there is pedestrian demand to cross from north to south (and vice versa), at the junction with Station Approach.
There are currently no safe crossing facilities, nor is there a footpath on the south side of Blake Street, meaning pedestrians must cross and walk in live carriageway onto Station Approach. This demand is due to the nearby Blake Street train station, which is situated on the east side of Station Approach. This demand is anticipated to increase in the future due to HS2.
The road has a speed limit of 40mph and therefore a puffin crossing is considered, through assessment, to be the most appropriate solution.
