Preservation and conservation overview

Our aims

The aim of the Archive Service is to ensure that our county's written heritage is preserved for use by present and future generations.

In this process, our conservators play a vital role by providing an expertise in preservation and conservation methods and techniques. It is the conservators' task to preserve collections and to strengthen and repair documents so that further deterioration is prevented and so that documents can be used for research without fear of further damage.

Our role

The role of the conservation team is to provide preservation and conservation services to collections held at our service points:

The conservation staff are also responsible for the monitoring and maintenance of the correct environmental storage conditions that are vital to long term preservation of collections.

The conservation studio is physically located at the Staffordshire Record Office with each service point having a share of available time. The conservators are also happy to advise members of the public about the preservation of archives.
