Mental wellbeing

We all need good mental health and wellbeing to live happy and healthy lives, and can help us sleep better, feel better, do the things we want to do and have more positive relationships. It can also help us deal with difficult times in the future.

What is good mental health?

Looking after our mental health is not something we should just do if we are struggling, or feeling low, anxious or stressed. It's actually something we should think about all the time and really invest in, just like with our physical health.

There are lots of little things we can all do to help look after our mental health. Find expert advice and practical tips on the NHS Every Mind Matters pages.

Five ways to wellbeing

Research shows that positive actions that impact in our day to day life can add up to 7-12 years onto your life and make you feel good day-to-day.

Build the 'five ways to wellbeing' into your daily life to look after your wellbeing.

They are:

  1. Connect - talk and listen, be there, feel connected, make social connections with others.

  2. Be active - do what you can, enjoy what you do, move your mood. Get active to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

  3. Take notice - remember the simple things that give you joy. Find out how to take notice on the mindfulness pages from NHS Choices.

  4. Learn - embrace new experiences, see opportunities, surprise yourself. There are many learning opportunities in the county.

  5. Give - your time, your words, your presence. Consider searching for  volunteering opportunities in the local area.

Transforming community mental health services

We're working with GPs, voluntary organisations and people with lived experience, across the whole of Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent to make community mental health services better.

The changes will make it easier for people to find and use services that help them live well in their community.
