Climate change

We’re on a mission to Make Staffordshire Sustainable and ensure that our beautiful county is clean, green and safe.

We recognise the importance of climate change and its impact on the residents and business of Staffordshire. In July 2019 we declared a climate change emergency to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 across every aspect of our service provision and estate.

Since declaring a climate change emergency, we have reduced our carbon emissions by 50%.

We have done this by:

The county creates 6.5m tonnes of carbon each year. This is where carbon comes from in Staffordshire:

IndustryPercentage of carbon created
Transport 40%
Industry 24%
Residential Properties 23%
Commercial 6%
Agriculture 6%
Public Sector 2%
Other 1%

Our plans to combat climate change

Our strategic plan highlights climate change as one of its key principles. We have pledged to 'think climate change in all we do to limit our impact on the environment'.

We release an annual report each year to show our progress and we have a 5-year action plan and adaptation strategy.

How we’re Making Staffordshire Sustainable

Sustainabilty Board

We’re working with the Staffordshire Sustainability Board which has elected members from councils to discuss sustainability issues and deliver positive outcomes.

The board has made ten commitments that will help to reduce Staffordshire’s carbon emissions

Carbon bubble

Last year, we ran a ‘carbon bubble roadshow’ to educate residents about climate change and how to reduce your carbon footprint.

Staffordshire Warmer Homes

We have helped over 900 residents with funding for energy efficiency measures in the home through the Staffordshire Warmer Homes Scheme.

Applications are currently open.

Climate Action Fund

We’ve helped over 290 community groups with over £200,000 funding for green initiatives through the climate action fund
