School Travel Plans

stars-logo2What is a School Travel Plan?

A School Travel Plan is a document which sets out how a school will promote active and sustainable travel in their school with the aim of reducing the number of journeys made by private vehicles. Modeshift STARS is the centre of excellence for the delivery of effective school travel plans, used by Staffordshire County Council.

The Modeshift STARS online platform provides a comprehensive travel planning tool that assists in creating and implementing travel plans. It allows you to monitor and evaluate travel plans and the initiatives contained within them. The scheme recognises and rewards schools that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable, active travel. Schools can strive for their Green, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum awards.

The School Travel team are working with many Staffordshire schools, including new and expansion schools, Air Quality project schools and schools who have expressed a commitment to increasing active travel levels at their school. The team work closely with these schools to develop and implement their School Travel Plan and the Action Plan contained within it. Free resources are available to these schools in order to promote walking and cycling to increase levels of active travel.

Benefits to your school include:

  • Puts Active and Sustainable travel on the school agenda.
  • Supporting Active Travel benefits the school and local community by reducing traffic and congestion and improving air quality around the school.
  • Promotes a healthy, active lifestyle by encouraging Active Travel to school.
  • Can help lower your school’s carbon footprint.
  • Increases the health and well-being of staff, pupils and parents.
  • Free resources to participating schools.
