Staffordshire and Health and Social Care

This is not only the largest employment sector in Staffordshire it has also seen the largest growth since 2003.

  • Here, this sector has an ageing workforce coupled with an ageing population. It is therefore expected that there will be a considerable demand for new and replacement staff.
     
  • This sector is dominated by the employment of managers and senior officers, professional occupations and technical occupations.
     
  • Adult social care is a growing sector, which offers a range of rewarding careers, with many different job roles, and lots of opportunities for progression.

Health and Social Care is made up of a wide range of careers in services working with children, young people, adults, families and older adults including:

  • Residential care
  • Hospital activities
  • Nursing homes
  • Child care
  • GP services
  • Social work
  • Dental services
  • Education about healthy lifestyles etc

Qualifications and routes

Within this sector there are many varied opportunities at all levels. Some roles require professional qualifications; others need vocational (work-related) qualifications and some need specialist skills.

If your child wants to become a doctor, nurse, dentist, physiotherapist, radiographer, social worker or other specialist health or social care professional they will need excellent  GCSE and  ‘A’ level grades (or equivalents) and to study up to  degree level whilst completing extensive on-the-job training.

Your child may not need formal qualifications before beginning a career in social care as there are plenty of opportunities to acquire more skills, training and qualifications depending on how far they want to take their career.

In addition to the above, whilst your child is still at school there maybe opportunities to take qualifications such as a  GCSE in health and social care or a BTEC in health and social care.
