EP Recommended Approach to Literacy

Staffordshire County Council is committed to meeting the needs of all children with literacy difficulties. As these difficulties are widespread, the most effective use of resources is to support schools in order to develop their systems to enable teachers in school identify literacy difficulties as soon as possible, complete comprehensive assessments and deliver scientifically validated interventions.  For more details of this please refer to the SCC Literacy Guidance 2021 (459 KB).

In order to further support schools to meet literacy difficulties, the Educational Psychology Service has developed the EP Recommended Approach to Literacy which is a three phased approach which focuses on the enjoyment of reading and improving decoding skills (Phase 1), support if children are not making expected progress with the approach (Phase 2) and improving spelling, language and comprehension skills (Phase 3).
