New year, greener you

It’s a brand-new year and a brand-new you! Each month we have a sustainable challenge for you to attempt, so by the end of the year, you will be a new, greener you!

This month is national walking month!

We are encouraging residents to try to walk as much as possible in May and ditch the car for short journeys. This could be walking to school or work, walking to the local shops or just getting out and about and try to get your 10,000 steps in a day.

Walking instead of driving where you can, not only is healthier but also helps to cut down on harmful air pollution.

66% of all journeys are less than 5 miles, yet just 10 minutes of walking goes a long way towards keeping you healthy. It gets your blood pumping, reduces stress levels and your risk of heart disease.

Air quality is a very localised issue and is usually at its worst along or near to major roads, especially those that suffer from congestion. Why not walk part of the way and get to work refreshed and ready for the day?
