Improve traffic flow and safety in Sandon Village

Dear Mr Bayliss

I refer to the petition, signed by local residents regarding requests to improve traffic flow and safety in the village of Sandon. I can advise you that receipt of the petition will be reported to Cllr Helen Fisher, Cabinet Member for Highways & Transport.

The Council has to prioritise limited public funding for road safety improvements towards locations where there is an established pattern of treatable collisions involving personal injury, in order to fulfil its statutory duties. Based on current data, there are no plans at present to investigate the feasibility of reducing speed limits, introducing traffic calming measures or other physical features in Sandon; and there are no plans to consider Traffic Regulation Orders or introducing new infrastructure to alter flows or volumes of traffic in the village.

The schemes suggested by the petition organisers would require significant investment which could not be justified based on current data held for this location. We will of course continue to monitor data for the routes through the village and our Accident Investigation Unit will look for trends or patterns in road traffic collision data involving personal injury. If patterns of incidents emerge in this data, then improvement schemes proportionate to any accident problem will be designed and prioritised against other locations in Staffordshire.

Where data does not exist to support improvements, but where community concern remains, the Divisional Highway Programme (DHP) can be used to secure funding for measures that would otherwise not meet the criteria for intervention. Details of the schemes requested via the petition have been recorded on the DHP for the local County Councillor Ian Parry, who may choose to fund further investigation into the various concerns about traffic in the village, in the future.

Should you require further information regarding your petition please contact Richard Rayson on 0300 111 8000.

Yours sincerely

Amanda Felton
