Staffordshire Children Centre Volunteers

The children’s centres across Staffordshire offer a volunteer programme. Volunteers are a key part of the way we deliver services and their contribution is vital.

Why volunteer?

The skills and experience of our volunteers make a significant contribution to help ensure our services meet the needs of the local community. Our aim is to ensure our volunteers play a full and active part in the children’s centre service delivery and are an integral part of the organisation and any future development.

Volunter handbook

We provide each volunteer with their own volunteer handbook. This enables the volunteer to have a full record of their skills, training record, type of volunteering placements and their attendance.

The children’s centre will meet with the volunteer to support them in achieving what they set out to achieve. These meetings also enable flexibility for the volunteer should they wish to try different things.

Roles available

Whilst we have specific roles available for volunteers, we believe in having the flexibility to produce a role that would suit the skills and attributes of each volunteer. We meet the volunteer face to face to discuss what they would like to achieve and let them lead on the role they see themselves doing. Some of the types of roles we provide are:

Play workers

This role involves:

  • Working directly with children.
  • Supporting families through planned activities.
  • Creating a warm and welcoming environment for families.

You will also need to help other members of staff with:

  • session planning
  • setting up the activities
  • clearing away at the end

You should be friendly and approachable, and have the ability to work and communicate within a team.

For more information about the role, see the full role description below:

Reception staff

This role involves:

  • Meeting and greeting people when they enter the building.
  • Helping families complete forms and registrations.
  • Answering the main reception phone.

For more information about the role, see the full role description below:

Marketing and communications assistant

This role involves working with a team to:

  • Promote activities and services to familes.
  • Assist with the design and distribution of promotional materials - including social media and websites.

For more information about the role, see the full role description below:

Community communicators

This role involves attending groups within the district to help to promote our services and break down any language barriers.

For more information about the role, see the full role description below:

Our volunteer programme would suit any individual who would like to make a difference. If you are volunteering within a placement where children are present you would need:

  • A valid DBS check.
  • A Level 1 safeguarding qualification.
  • To take part in Prevent training.

We will offer all these free of charge and we will support you with the training process.

What will you get out of volunteering?

There are many reasons why people volunteer, some of these include:

  • Gaining confidence
  • Giving something back to their local community or make a difference
  • Work experience
  • Meeting new people and socialising
  • Learning new skills
  • Taking on a new challenge
  • Having fun!

Who do I contact?
