A Social Work Pilot in Cannock is Helping Parents and Children

Posted on Wednesday 28th August 2019

A new pilot in Cannock is focused on tackling the root cause of family problems by helping parents as well as children.

This pilot is focused on tackling the root causes of parental problems by working closely with parents to improve the whole family situation. We have introduced ‘Adult Specialist Workers’ into the Children’s Social Care Team based at Springvale. These workers will be able to offer parents wrap around support with issues such as subscene abuse issues,  debt, finance and housing.

Much has been written about the ‘hidden harm’ children can face with parents that have mental health, domestic abuse and substance misuse issues. The combination of these issues is often extremely detrimental to the safety and wellbeing of the child.

In January 2020, we will have two new Mental Health practitioners joining the team and in the future we hope to secure some Domestic Violence Support workers to give families in need all the help they require.

Social Workers are highly qualified and skilled in the protection of children. However, they cannot always provide the specialist support required to deal with highly complex, parental issues that cause risk to the child. The children’s social work teams in Cannock have welcomed the integration of the Adult specialist Workers into their teams.

Developing a close connection with the whole family, rather than just the children will help us to provide more effective support, enabling whole families to address their issues at the root, so they can be more resilient and less reliant on services to keep themselves and their families safe.

Social Workers see this pilot as an opportunity to make a real difference to the whole family.
