Sight loss

If you are having a problem with your sight the first thing to do is see an optician so they can check your eyes and refer you to an eye specialist at your local hospital, if necessary.

How can I get support?

Follow these 7 simple steps to help you get the support you need:

Get a professional opinion

Visit your local GP, eye specialist (optician or optometrist) or eye hospital to have your sight checked.

Have your diagnosis confirmed

It is important to have your diagnosis confirmed by an ophthalmologist. Ask for your prognosis and treatment to be explained to you in a way that you understand.

Speak to a sight loss advisor and learn about certificates of vision impairment (CVI)

If the diagnosis is confirmed, make sure that you are referred to the sight loss advisor at the hospital. Make sure you understand the importance of the certificate of vision impairment.

Get a referral to your local sensory (rehabilitation) team

Have a personal action plan

It is important that you have a personal action plan which is based on your individual assessment as well as a good understanding of the local services available in your community. These will help you to live a more independent and active life.

Continuously review your plan

Make sure you visit your doctor or eye specialist routinely for regular reviews of your sight and personal action plan.

Enjoy living more independently

By following these steps you will be better informed and be able to live with sight loss more confidently and independently.
