5 reasons to upskill or reskill your staff now

Most businesses are starting to realise that they need to upskill their staff to be more agile and resilient, with many wanting to both retain their staff and diversify.  But many can't afford the training that that means.

Businesses in East Staffordshire, Tamworth and South Staffordshire don't have that problem. Thanks to the district and borough councils pooling resources to help businesses with Staffordshire County Council, free training grants are now available to SME's in those areas to cover the cost of most training to upskilll and reskill.

But why is now the time to train your staff, even if it's paid for? We ask skills expert Lynn Eccleston from the Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce about her five reasons to get a grant and get training now:

1) Because normal is still on hold - adapting employee skills and roles to the new agile ways of working that have become the norm is crucial to building business resilience - and most staff need help to do that, including building effective, virtual customer - relationships. What businesses say and what businesses have used the grants for

2) Many businesses need and want to diversify - so need staff to take on new roles and responsibilities, often wearing many hats. It's far cheaper to retrain rather than recruit – and a great way to hold onto your staff.

3) There was a skills gap in most businesses before Covid, and there’s definitely one now, which needs to be tackled now to help build the resilience  your business needs should any future economic shocks happen.

4) The £5,000 grants available cover the cost of most training courses for an individual staff member. You can apply for more than one grant for a person, and you could train your whole staff for free.

5) We can also tell you what you may not know – what training your staff actually needs in today's world – through a fully-funded training plan.

So, now really is the time to get a grant and get training to build your staff's  agility, capability, capacity and motivation.

Express an interest to have a chat about your needs and apply for a grant.
