Care Home Career Progression
The range of roles with a care home are diverse, with a great potential for career progression and development opportunities.
Domestic Staff
Domestic staff are responsible for cleaning the care setting and ensure the environment is safe. They will receive their training primarily through their employer but there are additional qualifications that can be obtained to expand their responsibilities and potential for career progression.
Admin Staff
Admin staff are responsible for the day-to-day business tasks within the home, with responsibilities varies across services. They will receive their training primarily through their employer but there are additional qualifications that can be obtained to expand their responsibilities and potential for career progression.
Chefs
Chefs are responsible for the preparation and provision of meals. They will have specialised qualifications and will also need to undertake additional specialist training.
Activities Co-ordinators
Activities Co-ordinators are responsible for the provision of activities with the care home. They will have a Level 2 Diploma in Care and can move onto a Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care. They will also have additional training to bolster their specialised role.
Carers
Carers are responsible for supporting people living at the care home. They will have a Level 2 Diploma in Care and can move onto a Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care.
Senior Carers
Senior Carers are responsible for supporting people living at the care home but will also take on more senior duties. They will have a Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care and as part of their career progression can move onto Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care once they are ready. Individuals with management potential should be identifiedand supported to develop their own leadership skills.
Nursing Associates
Nursing Associates will undertake clinical tasks, supporting Nurses. They are registered through the Nursing and Midwifery Council. To become a Nursing Associated you will need to undertake recognised training, such as through an apprenticeship. Once qualified, they can also undertake additional leadership training to develop into leadership roles.
Nurses
Nurses will undertake a range of clinical tasks will be registered through the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Nurses who are looking to develop their career can also undertake leadership training to develop into leadership roles.
Deputy or Unit Managers
Deputy or Unit Managers will support the Manager but will also on occasion run the care home. They will have a Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care and as part of their career progression can move onto Level 5 Diploma in Adult Care to enhance their leadership skills.
Managers
Managers are responsible for running the care home and will have a Level 5 Diploma in Adult Care. Individuals in a management role should be supported and developed, to ensure they have the skills to lead the service.
