Your Council Tax 2022-23

About the County Council

Staffordshire County Council is the top-tier local authority in Staffordshire, in the centre of England. It covers the areas of East Staffordshire, South Staffordshire, Tamworth, Cannock Chase, Lichfield, Stafford, Newcastle-under-Lyme, and the Staffordshire Moorlands, but excludes the city of Stoke-on-Trent.

Staffordshire is a predominantly rural county, but has its fair share of successful market towns and flourishing businesses. It has a growing population of around 900,000 residents.

The county council is made up of 62 councillors, elected every four years.

What we do

The county council is responsible for:

  • Social Care
  • Public Health
  • Education and Early Years
  • Highways and Transport
  • Household Waste Recycling (tips)
  • Economic growth in the county

Housing, waste collection, street cleaning, environmental health, planning and leisure are the responsibility of our 8 district and borough councils.

Dear resident

Staffordshire is a great county, with proud people and a rich history. Your county council is working with partners to recover from the challenges of the past two years. We are ambitious for Staffordshire’s future and focused on how we make a positive impacton the lives of the people we serve.

In the year ahead we will continue to invest for the benefit of Staffordshire and its people. Exciting investment in our economy will help attract new businesses and support existing ones to grow, creating more jobs and opportunities for our people.

We will invest in schools, skills and training, and ultrafast broadband. Weare also investing an extra £17.5 million to fix more roads. All things that will make a positive difference to Staffordshire people and improve our great county.

Our spending plans must also be sustainable. Over the next 12 months, we will accelerate action on climate change and invest in projects that support, inspire and encourage more people to live, work and travel more sustainably.

Staffordshire is a well-run, financially stable county council. Around two thirds of our budget will be spent on social care and supporting young people in 2022-23. We will always support those who need us most, soit is important we live within our means and deliver value for money in all we do.

Your council tax is crucial, funding our essential work for Staffordshire people and businesses. The Government’s increase in National Insurance is intended to support social care but for now that money is being used solely for the NHS. So we must carry on funding care from current income and council tax.

Alan White

Therefore, from April, we will be increasing council tax by 2.99 per cent, the equivalent of 78p per week for a Band D property. Even with this rise, Staffordshire’s council tax remains one of the lowest of any county in England.

We have dedicated and secured more than £5.4m to help us achieve carbon net zero by 2050. This includes £3m to install energy efficiency and carbon saving measures in Staffordshire schools.

HighwaysHighways

We are investing an extra £17.5 million into repairing and maintaining the county’s 6,200km of highways, taking our total investment this year to £44 million. The money will fund pothole repairs, gully cleaning, and large rresurfacing projects.

BusinessBusiness

Since 2014 the Council’s £390 million Economic Growth Programme has delivered more than 10,000 jobs and enabled more than 4,000 houses to be built, and we are continuing to support businesses and the Staffordshire economy.

SchoolsSchools

This year we’ll be investing a further £18 million into expanding schools and building new ones to cope with increasing demand for school places, to ensure the county’s children can learn in an environment that benefits their education.
